Babar Azam is Not the Real King; We Need a Performer: Mohammad Hafeez

In a recent statement that has sparked widespread debate, former Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Hafeez has openly criticized star batsman Babar Azam, questioning his ability to deliver in high-pressure games, especially against arch-rivals India. Hafeez’s comments came after Pakistan’s six-wicket defeat against India in the Champions Trophy, where Babar’s performance failed to meet expectations.

Hafeez, known for his straightforward opinions, didn’t hold back. “Babar Azam is not the real king. Look at Virat Kohli—his performances have dominated the world. We need a performer, not just a player with a PR machine behind him,” he said.

Babar Azam’s Performance Against India: A Closer Look

During Pakistan’s innings in the match, Babar Azam scored 23 runs off 26 balls, including five boundaries. However, he was caught out in the 9th over off Hardik Pandya’s delivery, leaving fans and critics disappointed.

Hafeez further questioned Babar’s impact in high-pressure games. “Babar is a good player, but can anyone name a Player of the Match performance he has delivered against India? We remember Shoaib Akhtar’s performances, Younis Khan’s contributions, and Shoaib Malik’s standout moments against India. But what about Babar? Where is his defining performance?”

Babar Azam’s Record Under Scrutiny

Hafeez didn’t stop there. He also criticized Babar’s record in challenging overseas conditions. “Babar Azam is not Inzamam-ul-Haq. Inzi bhai won matches for Pakistan in tough situations. Babar has yet to win a single match against India. He has been playing for over a decade but has never been the Player of the Series in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). He has never led Pakistan to victory in Australia or England.”

The former all-rounder emphasized the need for accountability. “We need to hold up a mirror and realize that the players we are banking on are not delivering. It’s time to move forward and give opportunities to those waiting in the system.”

The Need for a Match-Winning Performer in High-Pressure Games

Hafeez’s comments highlight a growing concern among cricket enthusiasts about Pakistan’s reliance on Babar Azam in crucial matches. While Babar’s talent is undeniable, his inability to deliver in high-stakes games against top teams like India has raised questions about his role as a match-winner.

Hafeez’s critique also draws attention to the legacy of past Pakistani cricketers who thrived under pressure. Players like Shoaib Akhtar, Younis Khan, and Shoaib Malik are remembered for their standout performances against India, setting a benchmark for future generations.

Time for a Change?

As Pakistan prepares for its next group match against Bangladesh on February 27 in Rawalpindi, the debate surrounding Babar Azam’s performance continues. Mohammad Hafeez’s bold statements have ignited a conversation about the need for a performer who can rise to the occasion and deliver when it matters most.

Whether Babar Azam can silence his critics with a standout performance in the upcoming matches remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the pressure is on, and the expectations are higher than ever.
